About Me: Bio and Resumé
Bio
Bruce Coughlin was orchestrator and arranger for the Metallica mega-concert S&M2 with the San Francisco Symphony at the new Chase Center in SF. He supplemented the legendary Michael Kamen orchestrations from the 1999 concert with six new orchestrations of songs from the past 20 years along with a new orchestration of Master of Puppets and a revision of the 1999 Enter Sandman chart.
He has created the orchestrations for over 100 shows, on Broadway and off, including How to Dance in Ohio, War Paint , Amélie, Dolly Parton's 9 To 5, Giant, and Grey Gardens. He co-orchestrated The Light in the Piazza, orchestrated the memorable Floyd Collins, the Broadway hit Urinetown and the Grammy Award-winning revival of Annie Get Your Gun. Other Broadway shows include: Guys and Dolls (2009 Broadway revival), The Wild Party (LaChiusa), On the Town (1998 revival), The Sound of Music, Triumph of Love, Once Upon A Mattress and The King & I. He has also contributed orchestrations to the Broadway hits Something Rotten, On the Twentieth Century and On the Town (2014 revival). On television he was part of the orchestration team for Annie Live! on NBC in 2021.
Other credits include two recent Ahrens and Flaherty musicals (Knoxville and a revival of A Man of No Importance), The Flamingo Kid (Freedman/Frankel; dir. by Darko Tresnjak), newly expanded orchestrations for Urinetown in London (West End), the 2014 hit production of Sondheim's Assassins at the Menier Chocolate Factory (London), First Daughter Suite (Michael John LaChiusa; Public Theater (co-orchestrator)), A Room With A View (5th Ave, Seattle), Tales of the City (ACT, San Francisco) and Children of Eden (Papermill Playhouse and BMG recording). He co-orchestrated Miss Baltimore Crabs from Hairspray (the movie) with Marc Shaiman. In the opera world he has co-orchestrated (with the composer) six operas by Ricky Ian Gordon including The Grapes of Wrath and 27.
Bruce was principal arranger for the Disney epic Fantasia 2000 and has worked with singers such as Darren Criss, Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth, Patti LuPone, Renée Fleming, Nadine Sierra, Darius de Haas, and others. He has won a TONY award, Drama Desk award and an OBIE. He has also received two additional TONY nominations and ten additional Drama Desk nominations.
Coming up: a revival of Once Upon A Mattress (Broadway, summer 2024), This House (opera by Ricky Ian Gordon with libretto by Lynne Nottage and Ruby Gerber) (2025), and a revival of Floyd Collins by Adam Guettel and Tina Landau (Broadway, 2025).
