Clicktracks(tm) is a Mac program I wrote for film and video composers which was originally distributed by Passport Designs and which has been in use by film composers since 1986. It reverted back to me quite a while ago. The new, updated version of the program is here now, in 2 'flavors'. The PPC version works on OS 9.2. MIDI functions require OMS. CLICKTRACKSX for OS X will work only on OS X. MIDI functions are accessed through OS X's CoreMIDI Library. A brief description of the program appears below:

What is Clicktracks?

Clicktracks is a collection of utilities for film and video composers. It is by far one of the easiest-to-use film/video programs on the market. It is designed to help the composer in writing music which syncs up tightly with the film, making all the "hitpoints" as closely as possible and in a musical way. If your needs do not extend to extensive database functions and the ability to generate "streamers" locked to timecode (which this version of Clicktracks does NOT do), you'll find that Clicktracks provides most of the functions provided by programs costing much, much more.

Clicktracks is primarily intended for the composer of independent films, jingles and smaller film and video projects, though composers of major motion pictures will find the utilities indispensable, as well.

If you compose for music for film, TV, jingles or multimedia you need this program!

Features include:

  • HITLIST displays the hitpoints in your cue, as you've entered them, and also displays the closest beat, followed by the closest MUSICAL beat (based on resolution you've selected), a picture of that beat in musical notation (to show you where you should write your music to best make that hit), and a display as to how far off, in frames, that musical location is from the exact hit.
  • HITMAP displays a bar-by-bar chart of your piece, showing tempo and meter changes and hit locations.
  • CLICKBOOK is a clicktrack book on disc. It works in any film or SMPTE format, allows for SMPTE offset for beat 1 (so beat 1 can equal the start time of your cue), and displays time locations for every beat at any given tempo.
  • SCAN finds the tempos that best make your hits right on the beat.
  • LOCK TO MTC allows you to lock your Mac to video by way of MIDI time code and enter hits into a new Hitlist by tapping on the keyboard as your film is playing. Used for one special situation: to spot a film which has audible SMPTE time code, but no visual burn-in. Except for that one situation, locking to MIDI Time Code is not necessary to use the program.
  • TEMPOTAP displays the tempo you tap on the Mac keyboard.
  • TEMPOCONVERT converts tempos from one format to every other and, at the same time, displays digital delay setting information for fractions of a beat.
  • TIMEFINDER is a timecode calculator.
  • (OS X version only): Ability to generate a simple click (via MIDI connected to a drum machine or synth) corresponding to your Hitlist cue, complete with tempo changes and a MIDI note-on for every hit. The internal sequencer does NOT lock to incoming time code at this time, however. For that you would need to export your Hitlist (as a MIDI File) to your favorite sequencer (such as Digital Performer, Logic or ProTools).
